Air Max Nation: The Air Max 1

Our new blog series Air Max Nation will take fans back through the years starting in 1987 with the release of the Air Max 1 and move you through the decades the Air Max releases.

Every sneakerhead owns them in multiple pairs, colorways, and releases, Nike’s been releasing then since 1987 and 30 plus years later everyone still wants them. How did the Air Max become one of the most coveted silhouettes in sneaker history? A look at the Air Max timeline and streetwear fashions of today gives us insight into a multi-generational phenomenon.

The Air Max 1’s form and function are inspired by the Pompiduo Centre (Paris’s Modern Art of the 20th Century Museum)

Tinker Hatfield, Nike designer responsible for putting the Air Max unit on display for all to see took inspiration from his architectural past and the inner workings of the Pompidou Centre in Paris. The OG colorway of white and red also links back to the center.

The Air Max technology wasn’t new, it actually first showed up on the Air Tailwind in ’78 and stayed hidden until Hatfield created the Air Max 1 and the technology was uncovered for all to see.

The visible Air Unit and Air-cushioned sole created buzz in the running world and athletes came by the masses for the Air Max experience. Nike needed it, their competitors like Reebok were creeping in ready to take the reins for runners and athletes.

The initial advertising used the Beatle’s song “Revolution” and the campaign was dubbed “Revolution in Motion”. Using a prime time slot in the wildly popular Cosby Show and showing up with a classic Beatles song Nike paved their way into the heart of athletes and marathon runners and success followed.
