Purple Tape Review: Everlast “The Life Acoustic”

I started this review with the intention of having a bad album to review to kinda balance out my contributions to this blog. I couldn’t bring myself to write a review for the latest mixtape release from Curren$y because I couldn’t bring myself to make it through a second listen which is what I really need to give a solid review of anything. That having been said, upon the first listen of Everlasts’ “The Life Acoustic” I was extremely surprised that I didn’t find myself skipping through the tracks especially seeing as how I can appreciate acoustic but I’m not a huge fan of it. Yea the whole acoustic folksy scene… nawl not particularly my bag. You won’t catch the kid bumpin that ole Mumford and Sons… umm ummpphh #hippiemusic

First off the production quality of this project is crystal clear and mixed by the skilled ears of some member of the X-Men team. No but seriously it sounds really good. And I’m gonna tell you the cold hard truth spoofing Wes Andersons’ “The Life Aquatic” for the cover art totally lured me in. Proof that proper marketing and creativity will still get you somewhere. The project is a refreshing break from everything else you’re listening to I can promise you that. My favorite tracks on the project are Black Jesus, Stone In My Hand and Grandma’s Hands. The acoustic remakes of Children’s Story and Jump Around are just icing on this cake. His voice and vocal stylings are perfect for the pictures he paints of the everyday all too familiar urban situations to which skin color is no boundary. 12 tracks deep it’s over in just enough time for you to appreciate it for what it is. Everlast… great job sir. I now have music to slowly walk away from just about any dramatic exchange or life experience while looking over my shoulder like Bill Bixby’s Bruce Banner.
