Air Max 97: Faster than a bullet train
The future forward Air Max 97 might be designed after a Japanese silver bullet train but the real inspiration comes from nature. Creator, Christian Tressor took the idea of water dropping into a pond that then ripples to the Air Unit. The reflective and polished lines on the upper turned the chunky Air Max models on their heads. The first release of the iconic silver bullet colorway also takes a nod from the metal finishes of a mountain bike.
The first full-length visible air cushioning came in a sleeker form than previous Air Max. This sneaker also introduced a hidden lacing system continuing to represent performance technology that has morphed into a lifestyle shoe. The 97 was designed for performance running.
For less than a year the Air Max 97 was on the shelves. It released in the fall of 97 and by spring was replaced by the Air Max 98. Nike was in a full Air Max swing and as quickly as the '97 came on the scene it was gone. The shoe sold in the US but became a favorite among celebrities in Italy's 90's club scene. Later the AM 97 came to life on the runways at Milan fashion week and was dubbed the Le Silver 97. The Silver Bullet OG silver colorway returned for its 20 year anniversary in 2017 and as many retro sneakers do, they quickly sold out . You can still find it on the re-sellers markets.
