NOT JUST A SHOE — A REVOLUTION
The idea of visible air within a shoe was the brainchild of two men, Tinker Hatfield, the Air Max 1 designer, and Frank Rudy, the man who developed the technology to produce the visible air sole units. At the time of its release on March 26, 1987, this technology was unheard of. Not only did you get the performance benefits of Air cushioning, but you could actually see the technology!
Over the next 30 years, the Nike Air Max silhouette continued to push the envelope of footwear technology and style. Below is a breakdown of many significant moments in the history of Air Max.
The original Air Max 1 with Nike Air cushioning was introduced in two colorways, Red/Grey/White and Blue/Grey/White with a retail price of just $75.
The Air Max 90 provided a better look at the technology larger as the window to visible air cushioning was increased in size.
The Air Max BW (Big Window) was introduced featuring an even larger look at the technology than the Air Max 90.
The Air Max 180 offered 50% more air than the previous silhouettes, giving us an 180-degree visible air unit at the heel of the shoe.
The Air Max 93 came along and utilized an updated Air-Sole construction method of blow molding.
The Air Max 95 was extremely pivotal for two major reasons - It was the first sneaker to feature Air Max cushioning in the forefoot and it was the first Air Max sneaker to become transition into the realm of being a fashion sneaker rather than performance.
The Air Max 97 introduced full length exposed air. Its design was inspired by the high-speed Japanese bullet trains, hence it's nickname, the "Silver Bullet".
The Air Max 360 featured 360 degrees of visible Air.
The first Air Max to incorporate Nike's newest innovation, Flywire, into its design for a more locked-in, supportive fit.
The Air Max cushioning in the Air Max 2013 was made more flexible and lighter than ever.
Pulled from Tinker Hatfield's original sketches of the Air Max design, "The One Before the One," better known as the Air Max Zero was released.
Air Max Day was March 26th, so it's only right that the new VaporMax featuring revolutionary "nothing but air" cushioning and flexible fly knit upper.
