New Era has been devoted to crafting the world's finest headwear since 1920, but it wasn't until 1996 when fashion history was made from a simple phone call. American film director and passionate New York Yankees fan, Spike Lee, reached out to to Chris Koch at New Era for an unusual request for the time - a scarlet red Yankee cap. Having obtained special permission to produce a few Yankees caps in colors other than the traditional dark navy, New Era presented Spike with a red Yankees cap to match his new red jacket. When Spike wore the then unorthodox cap to game three of the 1996 World Series in Atlanta, the demand for licensed products in fashion colorways was born.
To commemorate the iconic hat and the moment that led the way for fashion and streetwear to come together, New Era is releasing an exclusive collection consisting of the 59FIFTY New York Yankees hat. Scheduled to launch in the US on July 24th, the New Era Heritage Series: The 1996 Collection consists of the iconic cap being made with an all wool and a premium leather construction. Signature details of the custom "Spike Lee Joint" include custom embroidery along the inner sweatband and a printed satin lining. Releasing in very limited numbers, the Spike Lee x New Era "1996 Collection" is available online now at YCMC and in select Shoe City locations. The wool version of the cap retails at $40, while the premium leather version retails for $100. Continue below for a closer look at the scarlet red leather cap from the 1996 Collection.
