Converse Chuck Taylors are easily some of the most recognizable and most iconic sneakers still in production today. Officially called Converse Chuck Taylor All-Stars — or Chucks, Cons or simply Chuck Taylors to loyalists — these high-top sneakers are marked by their staple silhouette, cotton canvas upper and rubber sole. Why do we love Chuck Taylor sneakers? Well, besides the fact that they’re now available in tons of unique designs and materials, the basic look hasn’t changed since their debut in the early 20th century. They’re a total classic.
In fact, Converse sneakers are probably one of the oldest shoes still in production today. Created by the Converse Rubber Shoe Company in 1917, Converse All-Stars were marketed as high-performance basketball shoes. Interestingly, the loose, soft canvas was employed in order to move with sweaty gym socks and prevent blisters. In 1923, American basketball player Charles “Chuck” Taylor joined a Converse-sponsored basketball team named the Converse All-Stars, and became the spokesperson and salesman responsible for catapulting the shoe to stardom.
